We are pursuing the fundamental research problems and technology to ultimately achieve a >40% efficient solar cell system based on silicon manufacturing infrastructure. Current solar cell technology and systems cannot achieve both high efficiency and low cost. Such limitations can be overcome by combining novel silicon germanium and III-V epitaxy with optimal innovation in moderate solar concentration and light trapping to create the ultimate high efficiency, low cost technology. The base prototype is an innovative III-V/IV multijunction silicon-based solar cell utilizing light-trapping and 100x solar concentration. A successful research program will result in opportunities to scale the research effort and commercialize a new viable solar technology.
